Gone
Golfing—For a Good Cause

Jim
Brotherton, Jr. accepting a donation
from Dom Giovannelli |
American Mining Insurance Company
presented a check for $1,000 to Jim Brotherton,
Jr. of
Old Overton for the PGA Dixie Golf Foundation’s
annual Golf Marathon. The money goes to encourage
children to play golf, to help underprivileged
children have a chance to play golf and to
provide scholarships to young golfers who might
otherwise be unable to attend college.
Most of the money raised for this event goes
directly to local high school and middle school
golf programs in our area. Vestavia High School,
Oak Mountain High School, Pelham High School
and Riverchase Middle School all count on money
raised at this event to help keep their competitive
golf programs afloat. The first year Pelham
High School got money, they got $1,000. That
was enough to help keep them from shutting
the golf program down completely. And the same
was true of the Girls Golf Program at Oak Mountain
High School.
The
schools use the money to buy golf bags, uniforms,
golf balls and—for those lucky
enough to compete in tournaments, lodging.
Like most extra-curricular activities, schools
don’t fund golf programs. Unlike many
other activities (football is a great example),
golfing doesn’t really involve lots of
spectators, so you can’t really rely
on concession or ticket sales to raise money.
