Thanks to the efforts of many AMIC employees, our 15 year anniversary party turned out to be a fun and memorable event. The festivities started with a reception at the historic Vulcan Park on Thursday (Sept 30). The event was catered by Cafe Iz and jazz music was performed by the Paul Moore Band. With great food and entertainment, the party lasted till just after 8 p.m. Around 175 people helped to celebrate our anniversary. Friday's festivities started early for the nearly 60 golfers who made their way to the Oxmoor Valley Robert Trent Jones Golf Course for an 18 hole round of golf.

Blair Vass Talks Loss Control

Blair Vass (shown with wife Connie)

We recently sat down with Blair Vass, one of AMIC's Loss Control Specialists, to find out more about how he inspects the mines we insure. Blair is based in our Richlands, Virginia office and covers mines in Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana.

We asked a series of questions. These are his responses:

1. How many inspections do you average each month?
Blair: Usually, I inspect around 6 or 7 each week. Sometimes, I can get 2 or 3 mines inspected in a single day.

AMERICAN RE SAYS CATASTROPHIC CARE SERVICE HAS RADICALLY CUT COSTS AND LAWSUITS

Clients of American Re’s catastrophic care service have seen their medical costs plunge and the number of lawsuits against them drop significantly over the past three years, according to a recent study of 300 of the group’s cases.

That, Am Re says, reflects its use of Best Doctors, a Boston entity that screens doctors, picks the best in their field, and then quickly deploys them to troublesome or complex cases to achieve better outcomes for patients. It also leads to lowered medical costs and cuts litigation expenses, according to Evan Falchuk Best Doctors’ president.

Best Doctors, whose lists have been seen in various magazines on an annual basis for the past few years, has created a large and proprietary database of doctors who are peer-reviewed anonymously by other doctors. Physicians are polled as to which of their colleagues are the best in certain specialties, and those answers are compiled and sorted. Doctors also can nominate other doctors to add to the database. All told, only about 5% of the U.S. physicians make the list. “We can get very specific. If you have a certain disease of the right ventricle, we can find the five best doctors to treat it almost instantly,“ said Mr. Falchuk.
