CGH Insurance, a Berkley Company

What's Our Culture?

Recently, I attended a W.R. Berkley Presidents' Meeting in Greenwich, Connecticut. This was the fourth such meeting I've attended since we were acquired by W.R. Berkley Corporation a year ago. The President's Meetings are not a time for entertainment or relaxation. Our meetings begin early in the morning and last all day. These meetings are an integral part of the management process at W. R. Berkley and play an important role in establishing the agendas that are set in each individual Berkley Company

In prior meetings we have focused on "performance gaps" - those lapses between our best intentions and reality, and the need for a sense of urgency in closing those distances in our fast paced world. When our expectations and reality do not agree, we have a performance gap.

Evidence based management was the theme of last month's meeting. In simple terms, this means making decisions based on best logic and evidence, not ideology, obsolete knowledge, "gut feeling", bias or hype.

Next month I'll be back in Greenwich attending a different type of management meeting designed for individuals in leadership roles that are new to the W. R. Berkley organization. One of the topics on the program is "our culture". As part of the advance preparation for the program, I had to describe the culture of American Mining. Since turning in my assignment, I've wondered if my description of our culture would agree with our employees' description. Are we true to our mission statement, "To give our policyholders and other clients the assurance that they are getting a quality, fairly priced product delivered by a friendly staff, emphasizing integrity in every action?"

Let me know what you think. There is no right or wrong answer. Please email me your thoughts.

A Talk with Toni Shelnutt, Birmingham Office

Toni joined American Mining almost 2 months ago, but she's lived in Alabama her whole life.

What did you do before working here? I handled Self Insured Workers' Comp claims for a long time and prior to that I worked for a Workers' Comp insurance company.

Have you lived in Alabama long? If not, where did you come from/grow up? I've lived in Alabama all my life and grew up in Morris, just north of Birmingham.

Tell us a little about what you do? Workers' compensation has always been a challenge and you never learn it all.  Every day is different, which is great.

ImageRight Upgrade Complete

The upgrade to ImageRight version 3.5 was completed Saturday at Noon. You may notice an update script run the first time you try to log into ImageRight Desktop today. This should only take a few moments to run.

This update contains many bug fixes and enhancements. I cannot begin to list them all here, but here are the high points:

IMAGERIGHT DESKTOP

  • The ImageRight printer has been improved. It should run faster and the branch offices should encounter fewer problems printing to IR from the Citrix Home Office server.
  • You can now set a default Email signature
  • Added ability to edit email attachments from Message Compose window
  • Added buttons to include your name and email to global Stamp and Sticky Notes
  • Added ability to allow drop fax confirmation into the original document.
  • Improvements have been made to make the image and file list windows behave better on Citrix when using two screens.

SCANNER

  • You can now choose Color scanning from the Scan Mode drop down list
  • New options on the options screen allow you to specify how bar codes will split documents, either all bar codes or only ASI/ASIDT bar codes will split documents
  • Physical Page Count will be displayed on the viewer screen while scanning and on the scan accept screen.
  • Added ability to delete multiple pages from within the thumbnail viewer. To delete multiple pages, select them, right click, and select the option from the submenu.

If you discover any other new features that you like and would like to share with everyone, let me know!

A Few Tech Tips:

You can enlarge the text on any Web page. In Windows, press Ctrl and the plus or minus keys (for bigger or smaller fonts); on the Mac, it’s the Command key and plus or minus.

You can also enlarge the entire Web page or document by pressing the Control key as you turn the wheel on top of your mouse. On the Mac, this enlarges the entire screen image.

When you’re searching for something on the Web using, say, Google, put quotes around phrases that must be searched together. For example, if you put quotes around “electric curtains,” Google won’t waste your time finding one set of Web pages containing the word “electric” and another set containing the word “curtains.”

Nobody, but nobody, is going to give you half of $80 million to help them liberate the funds of a deceased millionaire…from Nigeria or anywhere else. And Bill Gates is never going to pay you for testing a new system by emailing something to all your friends. Sorry!
