| Barbara Cleveland, Lexington, KY Office continued
Are some days of the week/months of the year busier than others?
Not really. New accidents seem to come in waves but other than that, the workload is pretty consistent.
What exactly does an examiner do?
An examiner investigates new claims in an attempt to determine their validity. This is done by speaking with the injured worker, the employer and obtaining all medical information available to make an informed decision. If/when a claim is found to be legitimate, the work begins to ensure the injured worker receives indemnity benefits promptly and also receives adequate medical care for his injuries. If the injured worker retains permanent disability due to the injury, the adjuster attempts to settle the claim fairly and promptly without litigation. I handle AMIC insured accounts for Kentucky and Indiana. I also handle the Coal Guaranty Fund account as TPA for CGH Claims.
What’s the strangest thing that’s ever happened to you related to work?
I’m not sure about the strangest, but pretty ironic that my start in the insurance industry began while working for Larry Clevinger who became my mentor in the insurance world…….only to come back to his supervision 15 years later…….
What’s the favorite part of your job?
Being able to assist injured workers in getting back to work and back to a normal life. The majority of these employees have no idea what to expect or what they should do after being injured. It’s very rewarding to ease that burden for them.
What advice would you give someone just starting out in the insurance industry or with American Mining?
Learn as much as possible of the current law and regulations pertaining to the insurance industry and stay current on any changes. As far as what I’d tell a new employee of our office, it would have to be that we really work as a team….. Everyone is always ready to lend a helping hand if/when needed………Very refreshing !
What do you like to do in your off-time? Any hobbies?
I love spending my spare time with family and friends. My wonderful (and patient) husband, Larry, has been attempting to teach me tennis while my beautiful (and impatient) 15 year old daughter, Nikki, is trying to help me improve my golfing skills. Larry is a retired coal safety supervisor. My daughter, Nikki, is 15 years old and attends high school at Lafayette High……… Very blessed to have such a wonderful and loving family.
What are some of your favorite things to do in Lexington?
If someone is coming to the Lexington office for a visit, what should they make sure to see/do at least once? I’m a die-hard UK Wildcat fan therefore I love it when I’m fortunate enough to attend their games.
Lexington is great !! A visit to Keenland’s horse track is an absolute must….. especially if it’s the spring or fall meet !! Simply driving through Lexington and the surrounding area and seeing all the beautiful horse farms makes a visit to Lexington worthwhile.
