Berkley Life Sciences, LLC, newly formed in May 2007, offers an array of casualty products designed for medical device, pharmaceutical and biotechnology, dietary supplement, and contract research companies, as well as other industry segments related to the Life Science Industry. Our market knowledge and specialized expertise enable us to provide unique and valuable products for the life science industry. Berkley Life Sciences offers both primary and excess commercial general liability, professional liability, and umbrella through select retail and wholesale distribution channels on a non-admitted basis initially.

Berkley Specialty Underwriting Managers LLC is an underwriting management company that provides excess and surplus lines general liability coverage to the wholesale market and a complete portfolio of commercial property casualty insurance products to the entertainment, sports, and environmental industries. 

The Specialty Casualty division offers commercial lines general liability, including products liability for manufacturers exclusively on a non-admitted basis, while the Entertainment and Sports division provides a full portfolio of commercial property and liability coverage on an admitted and non-admitted basis to sports teams and facilities, entertainment and special events venues and operations, and to artists and professionals.

Its newly formed Environmental division provides specialty insurance products including contractors pollution and professional liability; pollution liability, as well as general liability; automobile liability; umbrella and workers’ compensation for contractors, consultants, laboratories, landfills, waste treatment, recycling and manufacturing facilities.

Nautilus Insurance Company writes commercial property and casualty risks, primarily on a surplus lines basis, through general agents in all fifty states.  Its risk profile is small to medium- sized accounts with low to moderate susceptibility to loss, with consideration for more difficult risks on a brokerage/submit basis.  Admitted business is also written in a limited number of states for better than average risks that have a lower susceptibility to loss.  Great Divide Insurance Company, its main admitted facility, is licensed in 49 states and the District of Columbia, while Nautilus is licensed in one state. Products offered include general liability, package policies, products liability, workers’ compensation and property. Its broad diversification allows it to react quickly to changes in market conditions or legal climate. The group’s business is organized into four major segments – admitted business, brokerage business, E-business and small business, and contract E&S business.  Products are distributed exclusively through appointed general agents who are authorized in a specific underwriting territory as surplus lines producers.

Select Specialty Managers, LLC provides non-admitted casualty and professional liability products through select wholesale brokers. Professional liability products target lawyers, accountants and miscellaneous E&O risks and medical malpractice for facilities. The casualty portfolio will focus on residential and commercial construction, products, premises and habitational exposures.

Vela Insurance Services, Inc. is an underwriting manager that specializes in writing general liability / products-completed operations business with a primary focus on contractors and product liability coverages.  With offices in Chicago and Solvang, California, Vela writes a variety of classes nationwide exclusively through its network of appointed excess and surplus lines brokers.  In addition to its core lines of business, Vela provides wrap-up policies for large residential development projects.  Vela utilizes W. R. Berkley Corporation affiliate Gemini Insurance Company, which is rated A+ (Superior) by A.M. Best Co., as its issuing carrier.  Its claims services are provided by Berkley Risk Administrators Company, also a W. R. Berkley Corporation member company, which, together with Vela’s Claims Manager, provides effective and efficient claims handling.
