How long have you been with American Mining?
I have been with American Mining Insurance Company for just over six years.

What did you do before working here? Prior to working for American Mining Insurance Company, I went to school at Ohio University and worked as a cook while in school. I started working for American Mining Insurance Company several months after graduating from Ohio University.

What is the CPCU?

The CPCU Society is a community of credentialed property and casualty insurance professionals who promote excellence through ethical behavior and continuing education.

Founded in 1944, the CPCU Society's mission is to "meet the career development needs of a diverse membership of professionals who have earned the CPCU designation, so that they may serve others in a competent and ethical manner." The Society offers tremendous careers. It also works hard to spread the message about the value of the CPCU designation to the industry and the public.

The CPCU Society is a membership of 26,000 credentialed insurance professionals who promote excellence through ethical behavior and continuing education. The Society's members hold the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation, which requires passing eight rigorous undergraduate- and graduate-level examinations, meeting experience requirements, and agreeing to be bound by a strict code of professional ethics. The CPCU designation is conferred by the American Institute for CPCU.

CPCUs have industry experience. To earn the CPCU designation, one must have at least three years of property and casualty insurance industry experience.

CGH FACTOID:

We have three CPCU credentialed employees currently, Chan Cox, Ed Glenn, and Steve Glenn.

I heard you were working on your CPCU? How is that going—and for those that don’t know, exactly what is it and what does it require? A CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter) is considered by many to be the top designation an insurance professional can achieve. Obtaining the designation requires an applicant to meet requirements in professional ethics, experience, and education. I recently began studying for the first of eight examinations to meet the education requirement. The studying is going well so far, but I have a long way to go before obtaining the designation.

You moved to Birmingham from Ohio, right? When did you move down? What surprised you about Birmingham and what do you miss most about Ohio? I moved to Birmingham from Ohio in November of 2002. Not much surprised me about Birmingham, but I found the subtle cultural differences interesting.  It was the little things such as calling all carbonated beverages, “coke,” as opposed to, “pop,” that may have been a bit surprising.  I miss being near my family in Ohio most of all.  I also miss the snow, the change in seasons, and being near familiarities of where I grew up and went to school. However, it has been great to make new memories and familiarities in Birmingham.

What’s something that everyone should do when they visit Alabama? How about Ohio? A few things one should do when in Alabama are visit the Civil Rights Museum, see the Gulf beaches, attend an SEC football game, visit some cultural spots such as the Birmingham Museum of Art, enjoy the scenery of the foothills/mountains, and experience the heat and humidity of a midsummer’s day.

A few things one should do when in Ohio are see the Great Lakes, visit Athens, visit some cultural spots such as the Columbus Museum of Art, attend a Big Ten sporting event (actually one should travel a little further north and attend a Big Ten sporting event in East Lansing, Michigan), attend a Blue Jackets game, and experience a wind chill that drops the temperature below 0 degrees.

What's your average day (or week) like? Tell us a little about what you do? A normal day might involve going to work, taking my dog for a walk after work, going on a run, studying, grilling out, and visiting with some friends.

What do you like most about your job? I enjoy thinking, “creatively,” in order to resolve a difficult claim.  I also enjoy communicating with a diverse group of people including injured workers, doctors, attorneys, insurance venders, and
investigative workers, each day on the job.  I enjoy working for American Mining Insurance Company in general, as a great group of people make up the company.

What exactly does an examiner do? Several responsibilities of a claims examiner include investigating claims, determining the compensability of claims, setting and monitoring reserves, monitoring and directing the course of claims, and evaluating and negotiating the settlement of claims when appropriate.

What do you do when you leave the office? What sort of hobbies do you have?  I enjoy taking care of my dog/pup, Miga.  I like to run. I like to play some golf, basketball, and racquetball.  I enjoy watching and discussing movies.  I like to hike, camp, and fish.  I enjoy grilling out and visiting with friends.  I enjoy attending and/or participating in many of the fun events around Birmingham, such as concerts and
organized runs.

Summer’s just around the corner—at least here in Alabama. Got any vacation plans? I am looking forward to some Ohio trips.  I am also looking forward to a Colorado trip and some visits to the Gulf.

Anything you'd like to add about your family or friends? I am thankful to be a part of a wonderful family.  I am thankful for some solid friendships that have originated in Ohio and Alabama.
