Getting to Know Leland Walker

Leland Walker works in the home office with the Accounting Department and helps with the Audit Department as well.

How long have you been with American Mining? I will have my 2nd anniversary with American Mining in August.

Tell us about a typical day? What happens when you walk into the office every morning? A typical day for me is processing claims checks, completing worker’s comp audits, and running check registers.  Month End involves bank reconciliations and journal entries. Lately I have not had a typical day and that makes my job interesting. (I like that.)

Usually the first thing I try to do is catch up with the previous day’s scanning and check account balances.  Then I like to get prepared to print checks.

What do you like most about your job? The Company I work for and the people I work with.  It makes a difference when everyone works as a team.  Everyone I work with makes work fun and not something you dread.  I also like the ability to do something different.  I am very fortunate to work for an employer that takes notice of their employees’ contributions.

Where did you work before joining us? Before joining American Mining, I was the office manager for Lindsayland – an audio, video, and lighting contractor.

How are things different than where you worked before? The biggest difference is the faster pace of work at American Mining.

What would you be doing if you weren’t working here? If I were not working here, I would probably be doing something in the medical field and try to incorporate travel into my job.

What’s one of the things that you’ve learned from the job that’s helped you at home? A couple of things I try to do at home that my job has helped me be aware of - is to go ahead finish what you started, do prep work for what you will have to do in the future, and take advantage of multi-tasking.

What are some of your favorite places in Birmingham? Some of my favorite places in Birmingham are Vulcan, Ruffner Mountain, the Alabama Theatre, and Five Points South.

Tell us a little bit about your personal life. What do you enjoy doing when not in the office? How about family? Anything you’d like to share?  When I am not in the office, I enjoy listening to all types of music, trying different restaurants with a group of friends, running and white water rafting.  In the fall, I really enjoy going to Alabama football games.  My Sundays are taken up with the choir and hand bells at church.

I’m single at the present time, but enjoy going home to visit my family in Georgia. I have 4 nieces between the ages of 2 and 21.  Those girls keep me on my toes maintaining my self-proclaimed role as favorite uncle.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Ranburne, which is a small farming town in east Alabama.  I have an older brother and a younger sister.  Growing up on a farm with a close knit family has provided me with a great appreciation for having family around me and also being able to be self-sufficient.
