The
Man Behind MIS
Corey
Chambliss
1. When you came to the company, what position
did you start off with? How has your job changed
in the almost 10 years you've been here?
I was hired as a computer programmer, my first
job out of college. I started out creating
reports and continuing the development of the
ICAMS claims system (see article below about
the recent sale). Since we have a relatively
small IT department, I
was
able
to learn about
most of our systems and network. I now work
with the members of my department to keep CGH
on the right track to make sure our systems
stay relevant to both our business objectives
and current and emerging technology.
2. Where did you work before coming here?
My wife and I are from Mobile, AL, about 250
miles south of Birmingham. While going to college
at the University of South Alabama, I worked
at the Sears telecenter in Mobile. I supervised
a team of about 30 call center workers. We
took calls from all over the country from customers
who needed parts for their microwave oven or
lawn tractor or table saw. In that job I learned
to deal calmly with problems to resolve them.
I learned that when things go wrong, like not
getting the right part to fix their chain saw,
people are going to get angry or upset but
you have to focus on how to resolve the issue
and not take things too personally.
3. How has technology changed since
you started working in MIS? Has it made it easier--or
harder?
When I started at CGH we had no email or Internet
access at all. Now we are able to share information
and documents with anyone else in the company
or in the world right from our desk. Compared
to 10 years ago PC's have gotten incredibly cheap
considering their power and capacity to store
large amounts of information. It has made us
more productive but at the same time more reliant
on the technology to get our jobs done.

4. What's your favorite part of your job?
The
best thing is there is always something new,
some new problem to solve. It is
frustrating
sometimes when a jurisdiction changes rules
or some other change is needed, but it gives
me a challenge and sometimes gives me the
opportunity to do things a better way.
5. Tell us a little about your average week?
The MIS department has ongoing programming
work to upgrade our system and keep up with
the rules
of the rating bureaus and jurisdictions. I
try to keep that work going a smoothly as
possible
while dealing with issues that might come up
day to day: computer equipment breaking down,
network or internet trouble and changes in
the
priorities of work.

6. Tell us a little more about DECK Software
and ICAMS....
A few years before I started working at CGH,
they decided that the claim and policy systems
that had been developed in house were at least
as good as the systems software companies were
trying to sell them. Marketing our ICAMS software
to other insurance companies and TPA's has
given me a great opportunity to see how other
companies
in the industry handle their business and how
they have solved some of the same problems
we have.
7. I hear you like Las Vegas as a vacation
spot. Been out there lately? What happens in
Vegas...stays
in Vegas.
